AS WEAPON OF WAR IN CONGO - LE VIOL COMME ARME DE GUERRE AU CONGO
Women and girls are bearing the brunt of the war in the Democratic
Republic of Congo. Throughout the four-year conflict, thousands
- perhaps tens of thousands - have been subjected to rape, torture
and humiliation by invading troops and the Congolese rebel allies
(see photos). Rape is being used as a weapon of war. Often women
are raped and subsequently shot at their vagina (see photos). Rape,
in these circumstances, can be officially classified as a war crime.
At the International Tribunals for Rwanda and Bosnia, men who committed
sexual violence have been found guilty and imprisoned. But in the
Democratic Republic of Congo, rape is a crime which is going unchecked
and unpunished.

Monseigneur Emannuel Kataliko, évêque de Bukavu, a dénoncé la main mise des puissances étrangères à travers les soit-disants mouvements rebelles Congolais interposés sur les richesses du Congo en ces termes
"Des pouvoirs étrangers, avec la collaboration de certains de nos frères congolais, organisent des guerres avec les ressources de notre pays. Ces ressources, qui devraient être utilisées pour notre dévelopement, pour l'éducation de nos enfants, pour guérir nos malades, bref, pour que nous puissions vivre d'une façon plus humaine, servent à nous tuer. Plus encore, notre pays et nous-mêmes sommes devenus un objet d'exploitation.
Tout ce qui a de la valeur est pillée, saccagée et améné à l'étranger (le barrage d'Inga sera bientot privatisé et le diamant Congolais se vend aujourd'hui ailleurs, aussi loin qu'à Anvers ou à Telaviv au mépris de l'économie locale.
